Bert van den Brink to become new Dean of University College Roosevelt
Prof. Bert van den Brink is to become the new Dean of University College Roosevelt in Middelburg with effect from 1 August 2016, following a joint decision by the Supervisory Board of UCR and the Executive Board of Utrecht University. Van den Brink has been appointed due to his management experience and involvement in university education, his vision of the next steps in the development of UCR and his personal enthusiasm and drive. He will take over from Prof. Barbara Oomen, who has been Dean of University College Roosevelt since 2012.
Bert van den Brink (1964) currently works at Utrecht University as Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, where he is Head of the Graduate School of Humanities. He has been a Professor of Political and Social Philosophy at the Ethics Institute of the department of Philosophy and Religious Studies since 2009. The focus of his research lies in the normative foundations of liberalism and democracy, and the controversial status of Western political values in non-Western countries, particularly China.
Van den Brink was previously a Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences research fellow at Tilburg University and Utrecht University, and an International Scholar on the Open Society Foundation Higher Education Support Program. He has taught at Spring and Summer schools in Beijing, Yekaterinburg (Russia) and Herzliya (Israel) and has been a guest researcher in Frankfurt am Main. Van den Brink obtained his doctorate cum laude in 1997 at Utrecht University with his doctoral thesis entitled The Tragedy of Liberalism (SUNY Press 2000). He has published numerous articles and compilations in the field of political and social philosophy.
University College Roosevelt
Like its sister college University College Utrecht, University College Roosevelt is an international honours college in the field of Liberal Arts & Sciences. It plays host to around 600 students from around the world. The institution opened in September 2004, and offers small-scale and intensive university undergraduate education.
UCR is an independent teaching college and is linked to Utrecht University in terms of academic responsibility. The Executive Board of Utrecht University appoints the Dean of UCR, however the Dean has an employment contract with UCR. The learning environment at University College Roosevelt has been rated ‘excellent’ by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders.
