Bert van der Zwaan reappointed as Utrecht University Rector Magnificus

Professor Bert van der Zwaan has been reappointed by the Supervisory Board as Rector Magnificus and member of the Executive Board of Utrecht University effective from 1 April 2015. Prof. Van der Zwaan has been Rector in Utrecht since 1 April 2011. He has once again been appointed for a four-year period.

The other members of the Executive Board of Utrecht University - apart from Bert van der Zwaan - are its Chairwoman Marjan Oudeman and its Vice-Chairman Prof. Anton Pijpers. The other members of the Executive Board are delighted that Bert van der Zwaan is again available to fulfil the position of Rector. Van der Zwaan's portfolio includes education and research, the professorships policy, science and culture, and student affairs. Under Van der Zwaan's leadership, educational innovation in Utrecht took another major step forward with the BaMa 3.0 project, with interdisciplinary research cooperation being encouraged by such measures as the organising of scientific research into the four strategic themes of Sustainability, Life Sciences, Dynamics of Youth and Institutions.

Prior to his rectorship, Bert van der Zwaan (b. 1952) was Dean of the Geosciences Faculty in Utrecht and Professor of Biogeology. He studied geology at VU University Amsterdam, before going on to obtain his doctorate at Utrecht University. He also worked at Radboud University Nijmegen. Van der Zwaan has initiated and managed scores of large-scale academic programmes. The Rector also holds a wide range of additional positions, including being a member of the Board of Directors of the League of European Research Universities (LERU), a member of the Advisory Council of Museum Sonnenborgh, a member of the Curatorium Prince Claus Chair and a member of the KNAW (Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences) doctorates committee.
