Utrecht University turns off the lights for Earth Hour
The illuminated Utrecht University logos on the roof of the Van Unnik Building - the eye-catcher in Utrecht Science Park - and the Buys Ballot Building will be switched off on Saturday, 19 March between 20.30 hrs and 21.30 hrs. By turning off the ‘Sol’ [‘Sun of Justice, shine upon us’ logo] together with the words ‘Universiteit Utrecht’, Utrecht University is again contributing to Earth Hour this year in raising awareness about sustainable use of the Earth.
Besides the university logos, the lights at the Utrecht Science Park will be switched off on the top floor of De Uithof P+R car park, and HU University of Applied Sciences will turn off its logos as well. The university is urging its employees and students via internal messaging to turn off their lights at home during Earth Hour. The university wants to integrate sustainability in all its activities and make this apparent to its students and staff.
On 19 March, millions of people and organisations worldwide will turn off the lights during Earth Hour to highlight their concern about the future of our planet. And more specifically about the role of climate change as one of the greatest threats to nature. The international Earth Hour campaign is organised by the World Wildlife Fund.
