New massive open online course
Utrecht University starts MOOC on clinical epidemiology
Utrecht University announces the start of a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on clinical epidemiology. Anyone who is interested, from anywhere in the world, is welcome to register for the massive open online course as of today. The Clinical Epidemiology MOOC introduces students to evaluating applied clinical research and data analysis. The MOOC is taught in English and is available on the Coursera platform as of 4 April.
During the course, students will focus on research questions regarding diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and etiology. Several research designs are available to help students answer these questions, including intervention trials and case-control studies using data obtained in a clinical setting.
Small private online course
The Clinical Epidemiology MOOC provides an excellent opportunity for students to become acquainted with this field of study by providing participants an impression of the introductory courses within the Utrecht University Epidemiology Master’s degree programme and those of the more in-depth accredited Master’s programme Clinical Epidemiology - offered as a Small Private Online Course (SPOC).
Both the MOOC and SPOC in Clinical Epidemiology are designed especially for physicians, researchers in medical and biomedical sciences and life sciences, and healthcare management specialists in the business sector.
This course is meant for all those with a passion for clinical research who want to improve their theoretic framework and thinking about research design. My message to students … just enjoy it. There’s nothing as fun as working with a group on research. Even working on preparation of research in your education can be really inspiring.
More than 50 SPOCs
Utrecht University has been developing SPOCs since 2010, making it one of the first universities to offer courses in this format. The University now offers more than 50 fully accredited online courses on the ElevateHealth platform. The advantage of SPOCs is that they can be taken remotely by students anywhere in the world without the need to travel to Utrecht.
Utrecht University uses innovation and technology to strengthen its teaching. To facilitate this it launched its Educate-it programme in 2014. Applying innovation and technology throughout the University allows large numbers of lecturers to gain knowledge and expertise in e-learning. Lecturers put their experience to good use in their campus-based teaching and SPOCs, and from now on in the MOOCs as well.
Four MOOCS in 2016
The Clinical Epidemiology MOOC is closely aligned to the Life Sciences theme, one of four strategic themes at Utrecht University. This year, the University will be developing three additional MOOCS within the other three strategic themes: Dynamics of Youth, Institutions for Open Societies and Sustainability.
