Utrecht University to release knowledge on affordable medicines
Utrecht University has signed an agreement with the World Health Organisation (WHO) pursuant to which the University, under strict conditions, will release knowledge on the production of cheap post-patent medicines. Utrecht University has accordingly set up a foundation, the 'Stichting Utrecht Centre of Excellence for Affordable Biotherapeutics', to facilitate the development, production and distribution of patent-free medicines.
One of the tasks of this foundation concerns the transfer of technology to private parties that produce the medicines, intended for poor and developing countries, under the auspices of the WHO.
The WHO's decision to collaborate with Utrecht University was based in part on the University's leading expertise in this area.
